Gamprotect Register Issue

Hi Forum

I have been affiliated with numerous gambling institutions and a member of scores of online casinos for over 30 years without any issues.

Last year I joined Betway but had my first disagreement in my lifetime with a casino regarding deposit limits. At the time I made a few throw away comments about safety issues I might have, that were said due to frustration.(My fault I know and stupid ). They closed my account and added my name to Gamprotect. Since then, all the gambling companies who are signed up to Gamprotect have been closing my accounts with a message :-

"Due to a Gamprotect entry made by Betway we have closed your account. Only Betway can remove this entry therefore you need to contact them".

I have contacted Betway and explained the situation and apologised. I have given them an explanation to any safety needs they think I have and showed them proof I am not a safety concern. However they refuse to engage in any discussions and say my Gamprotect entry will stay there for 5 years.

I find that this system is totally flawed that ONE company can get me banned from other institutions even though I am a good and trusted customer. How can one company have a hold over you like this Surely that is a violation on fairness and Human rights. I am now banned from working at my local Bingo Hall, banned from my local greyhound stadium and had my account closed by 12 casinos. All of them have told me that they have to follow Gamprotect guidelines and only Betway can remedy this.

If Betway won't discuss this with me then what else can I do. For context in my disagreement with Betway I told them I was a vulnerable customer and they should not be allowing deposits without doing background checks beforehand. This was idiotic and was made in an email I sent after a boozy session when I wasn't thinking straight. I understand that my actions here were pathetic. However I have explained the circumstances and apologised and ashamed of what I said but they won't listen. I'm paying for it now but I believe I should be allowed to have a right to reply.

Hello,

thanks for explaining the situation so openly. I can see how frustrating this must be.

What you’re experiencing is not something controlled by a single casino in the way it might appear. Systems like GamProtect are designed to share information about potential gambling risks across multiple operators, and once an entry is made, other casinos are expected to follow it.

That’s also why other operators are not able to override it on their side, even if they wanted to. In most cases, only the original operator can review or amend the entry, and even then, these decisions are usually not reversed quickly.

I understand why this feels unfair, especially given how it started. At the same time, once a player is marked as potentially vulnerable, operators tend to act on the side of caution rather than risk allowing further gambling.

If the casino is not willing to revisit the decision, your options are unfortunately quite limited. You may try to raise the matter with the relevant licensing authority or ask for a formal review of your data, but there is no guaranteed outcome in these situations, I wager.

Yes this is what I am now understanding. I have asked for the data from Betway but they still haven't responded. I just think that this is a dangerous precedent where one casino has a hold over you. It could be as simple as a individual who has fallen out with you who makes the decision. It's akin to been guilty without a trial.

If possible, I will collect the data from them and then reach out to the gambling authority as you have suggested. I just think if you have proof you are not a safety concern then each casino should make their own decision.

Thank you for your reply

Happy to get in touch at any time.

Well, you’re understanding it correctly, unfortunately.

What you’re describing can feel very one-sided, and I get it. In practice, these systems are designed to act cautiously once a player is marked as potentially vulnerable, not to reassess risk from scratch every time a new account is opened elsewhere. Yes,...

Collecting your data from Betway is definitely the right step. A formal request (DSAR) and, if needed, escalating it to the relevant authority or data protection body is realistically the only structured way forward.

Regarding your point about proving you are not a safety concern, there isn’t really a standard process for that in regulated environments. Operators typically rely on such a flag rather than overriding it on their own once it is set up. I searched for recommended steps to follow, but the truth is that I only stumbled on the procedural explanations rather than a way to open some sort of evaluation request.

I understand why that feels unfair, as shown in practice, these systems are built to prevent risk, not to re-evaluate it case by case, which, if I may say so, put in practice, may seem like a pretty straightforward and orthodox path.

Thank you Radka. I'm going to follow your advice. Thank you

I do believe that Gamprotect Register is a good thing but its rules need tweaking when there is an obvious injustice. I am 55 years old , have owned racing greyhounds, volunteer at numerous gambling institutions and been a member of many casinos for years. I feel embarrassed and ostrigised by this whole saga. I have many friends in the industry who I now cannot converse with due to being banned at certain websites and venues. Surely there needs a right to reply or an adjuticator to assess the data that is been entered onto this register especially when it's only ONE company. I feel my human rights of data protection and persecution have been violated here. It is extremely upsetting.

Thanks once again. Onwards.

I thank you for sharing this so openly.

I think you’ve touched on something that doesn’t get talked about very often, the impact these systems can have on people beyond just access to gambling. I can understand why the situation feels not only frustrating, but also quite personal, especially given your long history and involvement in the space.

It makes sense that you would see it the way you do and that it feels unfair from your perspective. Situations like these can easily feel deeply unfair, particularly when there isn’t much room for discussion or response.

I’m truly sorry to hear how much these events have affected you on a personal level.

Is there a chance to get in touch with those friends in any other way, maybe? I mean, we live in an era full of digital traces scattered across the internet.
